ABSTRACT
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) polarimetry hás been unanimously recognized as a powerful remote sensing tool in a broad range of applications incluinding image classification, land cover mapping, target detection, etc. The larger (with respect to single-polarization SAR) amount of physical information provided by polarimetric SAR, together cith the availability of several spaceborne and air-borne polarimetric SARs boosted new processing paradigm, namely physical processing, on which robust and effective algorithms can be developed on a physically grounded basis.
All this matter we be clearly detailed in this courses where a selected showcase, which is related to SAR polarimetry for maritime applications, will be presented both theoretically (70%) and experimentally (30%).
The theoretical part includes basic concepts of SAR polarimetry and how they can be exploited for several applications, e.g.; ship detection, oil slick observation and coastline extraction, in order to develop suitable electromagnetic models to interpret polarimetric SAR imagery.
The experimental part will focus on the exploitation of polarimetric SAR imagery to coastal area observation. Simple and effective physically-based techniques will be presented and applied to a selected test case.
Pre-requisites: basic knowledge of synthetic aperture radar and fundamentals of electromagnetic.
